By the numbers: The number of people in the metro area identifying as two or more races grew 157% between 2000 and 2022, to nearly 120,000. The Hispanic population — of any race — grew about 131% in the same period, to over 330,000. And the Asian population grew just over 117%, to nearly 200,000.

The Jade District in Southeast Portland is a bustling cultural hub, home to a population largely composed of immigrants and people of color. Many languages are spoken at home in this area, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian, and it's one of Portland's — and Oregon's — most diverse neighborhoods.

But Seattle has diversified at a faster rate than some other large cities, and as of 2022, Seattle ranked seventh for the share of the population that is white. Portland had the highest percentage of white residents, at 65.8%, and was nearly tied with Colorado Springs, Colo., at 65.4%.
